What are ABC Waters?

Water is one of the elements we cannot live without. We should do our best to maintain all water surfaces around us clean, because they are the ones that fuel our planet and every life form that lives on it. The ABC Waters or Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters program, started in Singapore back in 2006 and initiated by PUB, has as main purpose to transform every type of water form in Singapore a beautiful body of water. Whether we are talking about lakes, rivers, or streams, each and every one of them is targeted by this program.

So, what if the water in Singapore will be crystal clear and safe enough for people to enjoy it for recreational purposes? This is the major intent of this particular program; one of the goals of this project is to improve the quality of water in every water surface of Singapore by treating rainwater runoff before it reaches before it even reaches the water catchment. But, besides just insuring clean water for the people in Singapore, PUB also wanted to motivate the inhabitants to keep waters clean and value Singapore’s water sources more than they did before. In fact, various learning trials are already unrolling, in order to educate the young generation about this goal, as part of the segment of this project that wishes to raise awareness and make people more responsible when it comes to water.

Bishan Ang Mo Kio Park

In case you walked through the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, you may have noticed people that were brave enough to dip their feet into the water and play with their hands in the stream. At a closer glance, it is easy to notice that the water is crystal clear, as the pebbles on the stream’s bottom are easily visible. Having such an image in front of your eyes, it is easy to forget that you are actually in the middle of Singapore, and not on a remote corner of nature. What most people don’t know is that this was once a concrete canal, which was in the upper reach of the Kallang River. Due to the ABC Waters project, the lifeless canal was turned into a beautiful water stream, which is now home to a variety of birds, dragonflies, and even a few otters. It is a small piece of heaven on earth, where parents can bring their children to see the beautiful nature and unwind after a busy day. So, if so much can be achieved by reconditioning a concrete canal, just image what could be achieved if all of the water bodies in Singapore will be restored through the ABC Waters program.

But, again, besides the aesthetic part of this water project, the people living in Singapore, both young and old, will have the possibility to get involved. How can one participate? One can become owner of an ABC water facility and even of a body of water, plus this person can stir interest in the environment among students and other young inhabitants of the city. So, there is a bigger plan behind all these, and that is to bring everybody together for a cleaner and brighter future.
