Around 5000 HDB Flats Planned for Mount Pleasant – First Most BTO Project for Sale in Coming 5 Years

Mount Pleasant Area, the old Police Academy Site has been recently identified for new public Housing with almost 5000 flats and this build-to-order residential project is expected to get launched in the coming five years.

The residential blocks in this property will be designed with roof and sky gardens and the residents will be able to enjoy pedestrian routes, lush greenery and all essential amenities for a better lifestyle.

Although the estate is currently in the conceptual stage, its design inspiration will come from the nature and heritage of the area. The Old Police Academy at this site had four existing buildings along with some portion of the parade square. The new proposal states that these existing buildings will be retained and customized to create new community spaces for the upcoming homeowners.

This estate is planned to have a low-rise neighbourhood centre in the middle where residents will be able to access essential amenities such as retail shops. As per the statements provided by Singapore Land Authority and Urban Redevelopment Authority, this property is planned to have green, open spaces and it will also feature community spaces.

This 33ha estate has an estimated size equal to one-third of the Bidadari and it is bounded by Pan-Island Expressway and Thomson Road. This site is located in close vicinity to the beautiful town of Toa Payoh.

The residents at Mount Pleasant estate will be served by the MRT Station which is being constructed on the Thomson East Coast Line. It is expected to come into operation along with the completion of proposed BTO projects.

HDB was recently enquired about whether flats at Mount Pleasant estate will follow the new prime location model for public housing or not; however, experts stated that the announcements regarding this will be made in the near future. HDB also added that currently there are no plans for any private housing on this site.

The brownfield site has been already marked as a residential area under housing estate site under URA’s Master Plan which was developed in 1998 and it is expected to get minimal clearance from authorities on existing vegetation.

The lands at Brownfield sites had several previous developments. There are several existing pre-war bungalows near Mount Pleasant Road that are finished with black and white appeal and they are not conserved. A good class bungalow cluster is also located towards the north of the Caldecott area.

Note that the Old Police Academy was originally established as a Police Depot in the year 1929; however, it was later converted into an education and training ground for the police. Later, its functions were allocated to Home Team Academy in the area.

As the estate is located in close proximity to the Central Catchment Nature Reserve and there is a huge forested area around, the experts have also conducted an environmental impact study on this site. The development plans for the housing estate will be adjusted further according to the facts and findings obtained from the expert analysis.
